Cemetery Board

Wells County Cemetery Board
There are 52 cemeteries in Wells County. Some are maintained by churches or other organizations, some are maintained by township trustees, while five are maintained by Wells County through a cemetery commission called The Wells county Cemetery Board.

The Wells County Cemetery Board consists of five volunteers appointed by the Wells County Commissioners and are residents of the county. These appointed members have a term of 5 years and are staggered to permit appointment or reappointment of one member per year.

The purpose of the Cemetery Board is to maintain the five cemeteries under their care. This includes resetting and straightening all monuments; Leveling and seeding the ground; Constructing or repairing fences as needed; removing or cleaning up detrimental plants or weeds; and mowing the lawn.

The Wells County Cemetery Board reports the Indiana Historical Bureau. Each year an annual report is filed which includes the budget, expenditures, activities of the cemetery board, and plans for the coming year. The annual budget and annual report are presented each year to the Wells County Commissioners and County Council for approval.
(The Indiana Historical Bureau is a division of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.)
