Tax Payment Methods

Pay by Mail:
We accept personal checks, certified checks, and money orders.  Make checks payable to the Treasurer, Wells County.  Mail must be postmarked by the due date.  Returned, delayed, lost, or misdirected mail may become delinquent.  Please ensure the mailing address is complete and accurate, obtain proof of mailing date, and use the correct amount of postage.

Pay at the Treasurer’s Office:
Office hours are 8 am – 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.  The office is closed to observe legal holidays.  We accept checks, cash, cashier’s check, and money orders.  Make checks payable to the Treasurer, Wells County.  Credit/debit card payments are accepted in the office but can be made on-line or by phone.  (See instructions below.)

Pay at a Bank:
The following local banks accept payments: First Bank of Berne, First Merchants Bank, Farmers & Merchants State Bank & 1st Source Bank.

You will need to provide your Tax Statement along with your payment.  Bank locations outside of the County do not accept payment for County taxes.  Banks are not allowed to accept payments after the official deadline.

Innkeeper's Tax

What is Wells County Innkeeper’s Tax?

On December 6, 2022, the Wells County Council approved Ordinance No. 2022-25, which requires those engaged in the business of renting or furnishing accommodations to charge their patrons a 5% innkeeper’s tax.

Who is required to collect and pay innkeepers tax?

The innkeeper’s tax is imposed on accommodations that are rented for stays in Wells County that are less than 30 days. The tax is collected by a retail merchant (i.e., the innkeeper) from the patron (customer). The retail merchant then forwards the tax it has collected to the Wells County Treasurer on a monthly basis. To read the introduction letter to Wells County Innkeeper’s Tax, Click Here.

How do I pay Wells County Innkeeper’s Tax?

Wells County Innkeeper’s Tax returns and remittances are required to be filed with and paid to the Wells County Treasurer.

Payment may be mailed to the Wells County Treasurer’s Office at 102 W. Market St., Ste. 204, Bluffton, IN 46714. You may also make your payment in person at the same address. All payments MUST include an innkeeper's tax return form. Click Here

When is Wells County Innkeeper’s Tax due?

Payment of the innkeeper’s tax must be made on or before the 20th of each month. For example, tax collected during the month of January is due on February 20th.

How do marketplace facilitator’s pay innkeepers tax?

A marketplace facilitator (such as an online travel company) is required to collect and remit the Wells County Innkeeper’s Tax to the Indiana Department of Revenue. The DOR will then distribute the money to Wells County.
